This is a calmer version of the original Dobble game, which makes it easier for students to focus on what you want them to say (‘I have an octopus!’). As a teacher, I don’t care about them being fast or winning, so I ask them to say ‘finish’ instead of ‘winner’.

Larger groups: put 2-3 students in one team and give them more cards per team (‘We have an octopus’).

Language forms: instead of ‘I have an octopus’, students can also say: ‘I want an octopus’ or ‘I’m gonna buy an octopus’ or ‘I saw an octopus’, etc. You can practice negative forms like ‘I don’t have a …’. They can just name any animal on the centre card that is not matching with theirs.

Tip: for a fun alternative, ask them to look across and inform the other team what their matching animals are (‘You have an octopus’).
