Is it a …? Yes, RUN!

This game is a running version of ‘Guess the animal’. It practices closed questions and reviews any target vocabulary. It will also energize the students, so lots of reasons to play this game.

I usually have the students who are not running, ask the questions. I like that the runners also have to listen to the questions, otherwise they don’t know which card to grab.

In almost every classroom there are kids who are better at running than at learning (English). This game is for them.

In the video I have two cards for each word, which is a good idea if you want to avoid kids fighting for the same card. After a while you can have one of the students play ‘Teacher’.

Higher levels: yes/no questions can be practiced at any level. ‘Would you like some fries? No, thank you/Yes, please’ (at a restaurant) , ‘Did you break a bone last year? No, I didn’t/Yes, I did’ or ‘Have you broken a bone recently? No, I haven’t/Yes, I have’ (irregular verb cards on the floor).

Thanks, Maria. It’s great that you are already using it for different levels and adjusting it as you see fit.

Next time, you can also combine it. I have a card set with clothes and they first ask: ‘1 or 2?’ If I say 1, they continue asking ‘Is it a …(e.g. hat)? If I say 2, they continue asking ‘Are they … (e.g. gloves)?

You can even though it with countable and uncountable, for example with food. The first question would be: Can I count it or not? If say yes, they continue asking ‘Are there any … (e.g. grapes)? If I say no, they continue asking ‘Is there any … (e.g. sugar)?

I agree. The other day, my students suggested their own ‘parcours’, which made it even better.

Once they know the game well, you can also ask: ‘Who wants to be the teacher?’ … and drink your coffee while watching 😉
