Is there a…? (A game with Dobble)

This is a super simple game that always works. It is great for remembering vocabulary and internalizing the article ‘a(n)’ (‘Is there an octopus?’), which is always tricky for Slovaks.

It might seem a little hectic and exhausting, but that’s only to get them enthusiastic. I have actually learned two important lessons from this:

  1. chaos = energy
  2. let the eager ones go first, then create space for the reluctant, shy or slower ones.

So, I recommend starting as shown in the video and then creating some order and space for others by pointing at the student that can ask next.

‘Is there a …’ 2.0: I now play this game differently. When a student has 2 cards, he/she becomes the teacher.

Additional language forms: instead of ‘Is there an octopus?’, students can ask: ‘Do you have an octopus?’, ‘Can I get an octopus?’, ‘Did you eat an octopus?’:), etc.

If you don’t have the original Dobble game, you can download a couple of dobble sets we have created (see ‘na stiahnutie’) for your convenience using this dobble-generator.
